Charles Leclerc Wins In Monza

Every win in Formula 1 means something to the person who wins it, but sometimes wins can be monumental to everyone. This was the case this past weekend when Charles Leclerc won the Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari. It quickly became the biggest news story within the realm of Formula 1, not only because he won, but because of how brilliant of a drive it was and the emotional impact it had on everyone. A Ferrari driver winning in Monza is the best result any Italian fan could ever hope for and the articles following the win certainly showed that.

Every Italian newspaper had Charles’ win plastered on their front page the Monday after the race. Some headlines read “Leclerc triumphs, Delirium in Monza, The Gentleman in Red” from La Gazzetta dello Sport (2024), “The Genius of Leclerc's Ferrari gives Monza a crazy triumph, Magic!” from Tuttosport (2024) and “In Monza the Ferrari triumph and everything about Leclerc the Italian Lionheart” from Corriere dello Sport (2024). Due to Leclerc driving for Ferrari and Ferrari being an Italian team, the Italian press have a clear bias in their excitement over his success. The story making front page news clearly shows that as well as every paper focused more on his win and the emotion it brought to them rather than the race itself.

Non-Italian media gave more of an oversight of how Charles won rather than focusing solely on the fact that he did. ESPN talked about how “Leclerc and Ferrari were gambling on making a single set of tires last two thirds of the race” but that they ended up “executing a perfect strategy” (Edmondson, 2024). The article also noted that “McLaren had the faster car” and that they hoped Ferrari would “suffer a significant drop off in performance” due to trying a one-strategy (Edmondson, 2024). As a non-biased source, ESPN gave more information about the race itself and the battle between Leclerc and the quicker McLarens and how Leclerc was able to capitalize on their mistakes rather than just focusing on the win itself.

During the post-race broadcast, Formula 1 commentators had a mix of both perspectives. They highlighted the details of the race as well as the emotion surrounding the win. Laura Winter (2024) said “Charles Leclerc seems to win at these places where it matters so much, where the emotional meaning of it is just so deep” (2:50), which refers back to his emotional home win in Monaco earlier this year. Whilst analyzing the tire strategies during the race, Alex Brundle (2024) said “I don't think anybody expected Charles Leclerc to put in a 38-lap stint.” (34:46), which shows how impressive it was that he was able to pull it off. The commentators acknowledging the emotion behind the win as well as the facts of the race gave viewers an even mix of perspective of the win.

Across all the sources, I found that everyone was unified in acknowledging that Leclerc’s win was impressive and unexpected. Highlighting the emotional value of the win was important within the context of the entire season and what it meant for Leclerc and Ferrari as well as their fans. Not only was the win an emotional one, but the way he was able to win as shown in the ESPN article and the Formula 1 broadcast show how impressive it was against faster competitors.

Overall, everyone agreed that Leclerc had an impressive, emotion-evoking win at the Italian Grand Prix. Not only was he able to capitalize on the one-stop strategy against faster competitors but he did so in front of his home crowd. Nobody was able to deny how special of a win it was for him, proving that some wins mean so much more than just a victory.
